|
|
| I bought a Rover 220T 1993 and drove it for a year and then dicided to sell it to my friend who didn't take care of it at all... I have bought it back and planning to restore it. I have fixed almost every problem with it(broken glass panels, fixed interior, exhaust leeks, spoilers etc) but now I still have the engine. The valves are making rattle noices but asides that my friend did said he did not get the fans to cool the engine so he cut the fan cables and made an own switch to them... Aside from that he cut the cables to the "thing" that tells the ecu(i suppose) how hot the engine is. Well needless to say the engine runs pretty logger when cold. It will not run at idle but runs if you keep the revs up and if you drive it it goes fine. When the engine has got a bit warmer it runs at a very very low idle. I checked the "thing" and that one is working fine when i heated it up so I reconnected the cable. The thing is that the engine does still not run good. Now it wont idle at all. It goes fine with revs though. Is the ECU in some emergency mode and can I restart it somehow or what's the problem? If only my friend didn't cut the cable:( I am in Australia for the moment and wont be home for a time but it's good to get some suggestions. The car is based in Finland and they are really uncommon there so I have no one to ask. Thanks in advance! |

The "thing" is called a Coolant Temperature Sender or CTS for short, why did he cut that??
Anyway without it the ECU will choose a value from memory of 60 degrees for coolant temperature, hence it wont be fully operating the cold start so poor cold starting but it will be slightly overfuelling.
I suspect the CTS was faulty all along and that is why the fans didn't cut in

| I heated up the ECU(with a lighter though) and searched autodata for the the values it should give out. They seemed alright but maybe it can be faulty anyway? Should I try change it? Why he cut that? Actually I have no idea, he isn't that good with cars... |

Burning the ECU won't help! Reconnect all the cut wires to everything and remove the switch from the fans (the engine would be cooked long before the temperature gauge reads remotely hot), then replace the CTS (they're only £10) and see how you get on. _________________ Self-proclaimed Resident post whore! |
